In order to catch a tiger or other larger mammals, iron traps are laid in known animal trails. These vintage traps cause excruciating pain and horrific injuries. Once trapped, the animal is deliberately left to struggle for hours or even days, so that it is exhausted from its attempts to escape. Then a simple blow from a heavy stick or a stone is sufficient to kill the animal. Many poachers use traps that are illegal in most countries because they are regarded as inhumane.
