José Manuel Lamelas, 80, wakes up in his house in the Laviana council, in the Asturias mining basin. He worked as a miner since he was 17, as well as his father that started at the age of 9. Most of the former miners suffer from silicosis, a long-term lung disease caused by inhaling large amounts of crystalline silica dust, usually over many years. (Laviana, Spain. March 28, 2022)
