Seal pups cannot withstand long periods of time in the freezing water. They must wait for their mother’s return next to the breathing hole. Even during the coldest months, this species has the ability to keep their breathing wholes open even in areas where the ice can get more than 2 feet thick.

لا تستطيع جراء الفقمة أن تبقى لمدةٍ طويلة في المياه المتجمّدة، لذا لا بدّ لها أن تنتظر أمّها بالقرب من الفتحة المحفورة في الجليد. وتستطيع هذه الفصيلة من الحيوانات المحافظة على الفتحات التي حفرتها في الجليد على مدار العام، حتّى خلال الأشهر الأكثر برودةً حين تزيد سماكة الجليد عن قدمَين.
