Vessel, 2020

In this image I was looking at the idea of roots and routes which were shaped by patterns of migration. I explore the idea of identity as a continuum which can be shaped by a tangible connection to a place. The lady in the picture Dorothy comes from the Shaka Zulu family line which is a Zulu kingdom in South Africa and members of her family migrated and settled in Zimbabwe. The ship symbolizes that movement of people’s journeys. The idea of having roots in different parts of the world due to unchosen histories. There used to be a disallowance for the African body to be considered in a state of movement or contemporary. It’s important to populate our thoughts with the possibility of presenting ourselves as whole.
