Salt miners guiding a dromedary and donkey caravan through this desert’s unique salt patterns. Temperatures in the Danakil Depression, some 300 feet below sea level, rarely fall below 122°F. Around 750 salt miners are authorised to work in the area, digging out the mineral using homemade tools. The salt blocks are loaded onto dromedaries and then transported almost 50 miles. While working on the hottest place in earth, miners earn on average £5 a day.
