Fuelled by the sun

At their wintering grounds, Monarchs become most active around noon, warmed by the midday sun. Basking allows them to gather energy needed to fly, find water, and, later in the season, begin mating. The warm sunlight helps them stay active in the cool mountain forests of Mexico.
