Thais Mellado Fernández, 36, rests in the waiting room for the elevator that goes down to the galleries of the San Nicolás mine. She started working as a miner at the age of 21 under the condition of “absolute preference”, since her father died in a work accident inside the mine. The San Nicolás mine, in Spain’s northern Asturias region, is the last operating coal mine in the country. It once had 2,500 workers, but today there are only 200 left. (Mieres, Spain. Jan 26, 2022)
