Former miner Oscar Iglesias holds a wooden cage with his canary in front of the mine entrance. An allusion to caged canaries that miners carried down into the mine tunnels with them. If dangerous gases such as firedamp, the gases killed the canary before killing the miners, thus providing a warning to exit the tunnels immediately. Today these yellow birds remain an important symbol in the Asturian mining basin. (Mieres, Spain. Jun 3, 2022)
