Horizons of Identity
Deanne Fitzmaurice
This exhibition is a journey through resilience and identity, told in four chapters of human experience. From the unguarded emotions of athletes behind the glory of sport, to layered American stories captured along Route 66, to the redefinition of tradition through the eyes of a Black urban cowgirl, and finally, to the long and painful shadow of war carried by a wounded child from Iraq—these photographs invite viewers to see beyond appearances. They are testimonies of endurance, vulnerability, and the profound ways individuals carve meaning and belonging in the face of challenge.
Behind the Glory
Beyond medals and headlines lie the unguarded truths of athletes—their solitude, pressure, joy, and heartbreak. These images peel back the spectacle of sport to reveal resilience, vulnerability, and the deeply human emotions that define competition.
Layered Horizons
Through in-camera multiple exposures, Route 66 becomes a visual tapestry of American stories. Faces, landscapes, and symbols of the Southwest overlap into layered narratives, where past and present collide to reveal the complexities of identity and belonging.
Reins of Identity
The story of a Black urban cowgirl redefines tradition and challenges expectations. With strength and grace, she claims space in a culture too often imagined without her, embodying the power of heritage, gender, and self-definition.
Lionheart: The Story of Saleh
This project chronicles the 20+ year journey of Saleh Khalaf, who survived severe injuries from a bomb blast during the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq, exploring his transformation from a young boy receiving life-saving treatment in the United States to a refugee navigating life as a maimed adult, while shedding light on the enduring civilian toll of war and themes of trauma, resilience, healing, and hope.
