Evros: Life on the Banks
Antonios Pasvantis
Evros, the river that marks the natural border between Greece and Turkey, flows as both a boundary and a lifeline. For a decade, Antonis Pasvantis has traced its banks, creating Evros: Life on the Banks, a body of work that reveals the extreme beauty of the landscape while uncovering the human stories interwoven with its waters. His photographs portray the coexistence of Christians, the Sunni minority, and the last remaining Alevi Muslim community in Greece, observing their rituals, festivals, and daily struggles in a region shaped by tradition and labour.
The river is also a crossing point, where the pursuit of a better tomorrow meets the harsh realities of migration and border enforcement. Pasvantis captures these fragile moments of tension and hope, documenting a frontier where dreams and hardships collide.
Balancing the lyrical and the documentary, this long-term work presents Evros not only as a geographical divide but also as a force that sustains life and culture. Through his lens, Pasvantis unveils the hidden face of a critical region, where beauty and adversity flow together like the river itself, shaping stories that echo far beyond its banks.
