Holy Island, Northumberland

A monastery was founded on the Northumberland island by St Aidan during the 7th century to aid the spread of Christianity. The renowned monk, St Cuthbert died and was laid to rest in a stone coffin and a decade later his body not at all decayed – an indication of his holiness.
